How It Works
Field of the Invention
The present disclosure relates generally to installation systems for wall-mounted services. More particularly, the disclosure relates to systems and methods for aligning a desired wall point location with a reference position detectable from within a ceiling cavity.
Background of the Invention
- Electrical, data, and communications installations in buildings frequently require precise placement of wall-mounted outlets, switches, or terminal points relative to framing structures within concealed wall cavities. In many cases, these services must be aligned with structural features—such as vertical studs and horizontal noggins—while maintaining consistency with room layout and surface finishes.
- Installation accuracy becomes particularly important in retrofitting scenarios or when access is restricted to one side of the wall. A common task involves locating the correct position on the wall surface, then identifying and accessing the corresponding location from within a ceiling cavity. However, this process can be complicated by the lack of direct visual reference between the ceiling and the intended wall position, particularly where the ceiling cavity is filled with insulation, obscured by ducting or services, or otherwise difficult to navigate.
- Traditionally, installers rely on a combination of stud finders, physical measurements, and manual probing to triangulate a desired location from below and then match it from above. This process can be time-consuming and prone to error, often requiring multiple trips into the ceiling cavity, drilling of pilot holes, or exploratory cuts—any of which may risk damaging unintended cavities, encountering obstructions, or misaligning the installed component.
- These challenges are compounded in older buildings, where framing may be irregular, and in newly constructed premises, where the ceiling space may be densely packed with services or offer limited mobility. On hot days or in confined roof spaces, extended time spent inside the ceiling can lead to fatigue, increased safety risk, and reduced installation efficiency.
Locate the wall cavity with your stud finder. Where the location of the wall plate needs to be, place the Magno Adapter directly in front. Using the telescopic pole, place the adapter against the cornice and ceiling. Be sure it is a tight fit. Taking a Stud Finder magnet, enter the ceiling cavity and go to the location where you might think the adapter is. Rub the magnet on the plaster to locate the adapter. Once you locate it drill through top nog directly opposite magnet ( middle nog if there is one ). Drop yellow tongue. Go back to where the pole is…. BE SURE TO MARK THE WALL BEFORE REMOVING THE POLE. Cut your square and you’ll be smack on your yellow tongue every time.
FAQ'S
What is the Magno Adapter?
What is the Magno Adapter?
The Magno Adapter is a magnetic alignment tool designed for electricians, data installers, and TV mounting professionals. It allows you to pinpoint wall plate locations with 100% accuracy from inside a ceiling cavity, without needing a second person.
How does it work?
How does it work?
The Magno Adapter attaches to a telescopic pole and is used in combination with a stud finder magnet from above. Once aligned, it gives you the exact position for your wall plate cutout — eliminating guesswork and reducing installation time.
